The Portsmouth City Museum is housed in a building that was once a barracks, hence the castle design with towers and turrets.
The museum looks at all aspects of the city's history with a permanent exhibition about its unique features, including its relationship with the Royal Navy and a gallery devoted to Sherlock Holmes and author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who spent his early life here as a doctor. You will also find exhibitions on archaeology, Charles Dickens and Natural History.
Visit the Picture Gallery to see the large collection of paintings and photographs. There are also exhibitions on Portsmouth Football Club, Southsea as a seaside resort and Portsmouth homes from the seventeenth to the twentieth century.
You will find the museum in Museum Road, Old Portsmouth, PO1 2LJ. For more information, see Portsmouth Museum.
